Nasir El-Rufai bail ruling sees court grant N100m bail with strict conditions over alleged national security breach case in Abuja

The Federal High Court in Abuja, Nigeria, on Monday granted bail to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai in the sum of ₦100 million, following his arraignment on charges bordering on alleged breach of national security.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik ruled on the bail application and imposed strict conditions for his release, setting out multiple requirements aimed at securing compliance with court proceedings.

The court ordered that the surety must reside in either Maitama or Asokoro in Abuja and must submit the original Certificate of Occupancy of a landed property to the court registry.

It further directed that the surety must be a federal civil servant not below Grade Level 17, with proof of salary payments for at least three months verified by a bank manager within the court’s jurisdiction.

Additional conditions include an affidavit of means, a bail bond, and submission of a recent passport photograph to the court registry.

The court also ordered El-Rufai to deposit all valid international passports and report to the Department of State Services headquarters on the last Friday of every month at 10 a.m. to sign an attendance register.

Justice Abdulmalik further required a verification letter from the surety’s department and a tax clearance certificate covering the last six months, warning that any breach would lead to automatic revocation of bail.

The ruling followed his arraignment on a five-count amended charge filed by the Department of State Services, which includes allegations of unauthorized interception of communications involving National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.

El-Rufai, who pleaded not guilty, was previously arraigned on April 23 on earlier charges which were later amended by the prosecution.

The court subsequently adjourned the matter for further hearing after reviewing submissions from both the prosecution and defence.
