NBA election faces fresh controversy over alleged service provider detention

Tensions surrounding the Nigerian Bar Association’s 2026 election have increased following allegations that the Managing Director of a service provider handling aspects of the election process was allegedly abducted at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

The allegation was made in a social media post by a political commentator, who claimed that individuals suspected to be operatives of the Department of State Services detained the service provider’s managing director while he was travelling to Abuja.

The post further alleged that the individual’s electronic devices, including a laptop and mobile phones, were confiscated and that he remained in custody.

No official confirmation of the alleged incident has been released by the Department of State Services or other relevant authorities at the time of reporting.

The claims have sparked concerns among some stakeholders, who argue that any disruption to the technical systems supporting the NBA election could affect confidence in the process.

The Nigerian Bar Association is currently conducting its 2026 election, with attention focused on the credibility, transparency and security of the voting and ballot collation process.

The allegations also raised questions about the role of security agencies, particularly after claims that the DSS had indicated its intention to observe aspects of the election process, including voting procedures and ballot tabulation.

However, there has been no independent confirmation that the alleged detention occurred or that any security agency interfered with the election process.

Stakeholders are awaiting clarification from the relevant authorities as the NBA election continues, with calls for transparency and adherence to established electoral procedures.
