NELFUND student loan expands to include vocational and skills training as the government broadens access to national human capital development

NELFUND student loan is set for a major expansion as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund confirmed plans to extend its scheme to cover vocational and skills acquisition programmes across the country.

The development marks a significant shift in the government’s approach to human capital development and reflects President Bola Tinubu’s inclusive vision for national growth.

The Managing Director of the Fund, Akintunde Sawyerr, disclosed the plans in Abuja during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.

He said the extension aligns with the Federal Government’s wider education and skills development agenda, describing it as a timely step towards equipping Nigerians for a rapidly evolving economy.

Sawyerr explained that while the NELFUND Student Loan currently supports learners in tertiary institutions, the next phase would prioritise individuals enrolled in vocational and technical programmes.

He stressed that Nigeria’s future depends on the right blend of academic knowledge and hands-on competence.

He added that the expansion reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to inclusive development. “No nation is built solely by philosophers.

It is important to have people who can use their hands, energy, strength, and skills to put clever ideas into action,” he said in the powerful remark.

According to him, multiple government ministries already play active roles in national skills development.

The Ministry of Youth Development, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Digital Economy all contribute to vocational, technical, and IT-based skills training.

Sawyerr noted that Nigeria had reached what he described as the “design, build, and operate” stage of national progress. In his view, academic credentials must be matched with practical capability.

“An engineer who can build is better than an engineer who can only design,” he remarked, underscoring the importance of balancing theoretical and technical education.

As the NELFUND Student Loan prepares for this broadened coverage, expectations are rising that the scheme will create new opportunities for thousands of Nigerians, especially young people seeking employable skills outside the conventional university route.

The anticipated expansion is expected to strengthen the country’s workforce and support long-term economic resilience.
