Nigeria Flying Eagles advance to Round of 16

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles reached the Round of 16 at the FIFA U-20 World Cup with a 1-1 draw against Colombia. Next up: Argentina in Santiago

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have secured their place in the Round of 16 at the 24th FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile after a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Colombia on Monday.

At the Estadio Fiscal de Talca, the seven-time African champions showed great resilience.

Goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt was instrumental early on, making key saves in the 23rd and 26th minutes to keep Nigeria in the game during Colombia’s early pressure.

Despite Colombia taking the lead in the 51st minute through Kener Gonzalez, Nigeria remained the more aggressive side.

Midfielders Tahir Maigana, Kparobo Arierhi, and Suleman Sani continually troubled the South American defence, with Arierhi hitting the post late in the game.

The persistence of the Flying Eagles paid off in the 86th minute when captain Daniel Bameyi calmly converted a penalty after a Colombian defender handled a goal-bound shot by Maigana.

Nigeria almost clinched a late winner, but Arierhi’s effort in the 89th minute was blocked inside the area.

With this result, Nigeria will face Argentina in the Round of 16 at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martinez Pradanos in Santiago on Wednesday.

This match is a repeat of their quarter-final clash in the last U-20 World Cup hosted by Argentina, where Nigeria won 2-0 in San Juan.
