President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signs the Nigeria Police Training Institutions (Establishment) Bill 2024 into law, formalising 48 police training institutions and boosting professional development across the country

Sponsored by Senator Ahmed Abdulhamid Malam-Madori, this landmark legislation provides statutory recognition and backing for 48 police training institutions across Nigeria.

The Act categorises these institutions into five key groups—Police Colleges, Training Schools, Tactical Schools, Technical Training Schools, and specialised institutions—strategically located across all six geopolitical zones.

Notable among the institutions now legally recognised are the Police Colleges in Ikeja, Kaduna, Maiduguri, and Oji River; the Police Staff College in Jos; and the Police Detective College in Enugu.

The Act also covers various Police Training Schools in cities like Bauchi, Minna, Sokoto, and Calabar, enhancing capacity building at all operational levels.

Elite Tactical Schools such as the Mobile Training Schools in Gwoza, Ila-Orangun, and Ende-Hill, as well as Counter Terrorism and Special Protection Units, are also included, along with specialised centres like the K9 Training School in Bukuru-Jos and the Marine Training School in Toru-Orua.

Under the Technical Training umbrella, the law recognises schools focusing on public relations, intelligence, communication, music, veterinary training, and cyber security, among others.

Senator Malam-Madori hailed the presidential assent as a transformative step that will professionalise police training, deepen security management research, and align Nigerian policing standards with global best practices.

Security experts praise the Act as one of the most comprehensive reforms in Nigeria’s policing history, expected to enhance service delivery, accountability, and operational efficiency nationwide.
