Nigerian Army soldier death clarification as military dismisses misleading reports and explains circumstances surrounding corporal’s death in Katsina

The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports surrounding the death of Corporal Ude Jude, describing circulating accounts as misleading and inaccurate.

In a statement issued on April 12, the Headquarters 17 Brigade provided a detailed clarification, stressing that the deceased was a corporal, not a lieutenant as reported in some media outlets.

Nigerian Army soldier death clarification noted that Ude Jude, who enlisted in 2012 and hailed from Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, sustained injuries while on deployment at a Forward Operating Base in Funtua, Katsina State.

According to the military, the incident occurred on February 16 when the soldier reportedly left his duty post to purchase personal items and was attacked by unidentified individuals.

Preliminary findings, however, suggest the injuries may have resulted from a physical altercation with a civilian, rather than an organised assault.

The attackers reportedly fled the scene, while residents assisted the injured soldier before he sought medical attention.

The army stated that Ude Jude was treated and later evacuated to the 17 Brigade Medical Centre, where he remained under close supervision for stab wounds and related injuries.

After receiving treatment, he returned to his residence but reportedly collapsed outside his home on March 24 and was confirmed dead on arrival at the medical facility.

Nigerian Army’s death reports also addressed allegations of negligence, firmly denying any wrongdoing and maintaining that appropriate medical care and support were provided throughout the period.

It added that burial arrangements were conducted with full military honours, and the soldier’s personal belongings were duly handed over to his family.

The army confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for the attack, while urging the public to disregard unverified reports.
