Nigerian brands celebrate customer service week amid complaints

Nigerian banks, telecoms and fintech brands marked Customer Service Week with staff campaigns and customer appreciation messages, as service disruptions and unresolved complaints renewed calls for consistent, year-round improvements.

Nigerian brands celebrate customer service week amid complaints

thenacre-campaign

Nigerian brands have used social media to showcase employee celebrations and customer appreciation campaigns during Customer Service Week 2026, even as consumer complaints over service delivery highlighted the gap between corporate promises and everyday customer experiences.

Observed from October 5 to 9 under the theme “The Extra Mile”, the annual celebration featured retro-inspired outfits, staff competitions, interactive social media posts and public commitments to improving customer service.

Union Bank, FirstBank and Polaris Bank focused on employee engagement, sharing photographs and videos of staff in themed outfits while inviting followers to participate through comments, votes and guessing games.

Union Bank encouraged social media users to rate employees’ vintage looks and identify the teams represented by staff members in another post.

FirstBank similarly invited followers to choose their favourite retro outfits and identify employees who brought the most energy to its videos.

Polaris Bank also shared themed staff appearances featuring monochrome and floral outfits, giving audiences a glimpse of the people behind the financial institution.

Beyond creating online engagement, the campaigns highlighted the role employees play in shaping customer experiences.

Frontline workers are often responsible for answering enquiries, explaining products and resolving complaints, making their performance central to the relationship between businesses and customers.

Union Bank’s Chief Brand and Marketing Officer and Head of Customer Experience, Olufunmilola “Funmie” Aluko, emphasised this connection in an article published during the week.

She noted that interactions across contact centres, reception desks, switchboards and other customer-facing channels influence the trust customers place in organisations.

Aluko stressed the importance of listening, taking ownership of customer concerns and clearly communicating the next steps in resolving issues.

Other organisations used the celebration to highlight customer-facing initiatives and reinforce their service commitments.

MTN Nigeria documented its Chief Human Resources Officer, Esther Akinnukawe, attending to customers at Y’ello City.

The telecommunications company also encouraged subscribers to visit its Experience Centres during the week.

Airtel Nigeria, meanwhile, outlined its priorities for improving customer experience.

Its Chief Executive Officer, Dinesh Balsingh, said going the extra mile involved listening more closely to customers, resolving complaints faster, simplifying products and improving network experience.

The company also acknowledged feedback from customers who challenge it when services fall short of expectations, highlighting the importance of responding to complaints rather than relying solely on appreciation messages.

Fintech companies also used the occasion to spotlight customer support and security measures.

PalmPay promoted its PalmPay Dey For You initiative and features designed to help customers manage transaction disputes and security concerns.

These included its Transaction Dispute Page, Night Guard, Large Transaction Shield and USSD Account Lock.

Page Financials also shared customer appreciation messages from its chief executive, thanking customers for their trust and feedback while reaffirming the company’s commitment to improving their experiences.

The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria combined employee engagement with customer education.

Its activities included a volleyball match between the FMBN Queens and FMBN Legends, egg races, sack races, wellness activities and other team challenges.

The bank also planned customer appreciation activities, product education and a public-awareness roadshow, extending the celebration beyond internal staff activities.

However, the celebrations unfolded alongside renewed scrutiny of service reliability, particularly in the telecommunications sector.

On October 8, MTN subscribers reportedly experienced network disruptions and took to social media to complain about interruptions and alleged financial losses.

A report by Peoples Gazette published on October 9 said complaints came from subscribers in Abuja, Oyo, Lagos, Rivers and Delta states.

Some customers demanded advance communication and compensation.

One subscriber, posting as @icekied, complained that three MTN SIM cards had become unusable during the disruption.

Another user, @36bgmillitary, claimed the outage had cost them a ₦7 million job opportunity.

MTN acknowledged the network challenges on Thursday, saying its engineers were working to restore service.

On Friday, the company apologised for the poor service, said service had been restored and advised customers still experiencing difficulties to restart their devices.

Although the reported disruption was separate from MTN’s Customer Service Week activities, its timing brought the company’s public celebration into contrast with customers’ immediate concerns about service availability.

The tension reflects a wider challenge for brands: social media gives businesses a platform to shape their public image, but it also enables consumers to share experiences that may contradict corporate messaging.

In an October 6 editorial, TheNumbersNG questioned the value of Customer Service Week celebrations when customers continue to face unanswered calls, delayed refunds, failed transactions and unresolved complaints.

The commentary argued that businesses need better service, rather than simply more visible celebrations.

The criticism raises questions about how organisations measure the success of the annual event.

While employee-focused content can strengthen workplace participation and make brands more relatable, online engagement alone does not demonstrate that customer satisfaction has improved.

For Nigerian brands, the real test lies in sustaining the principles promoted during Customer Service Week throughout the year.

Clear communication, accessible support channels, effective complaint resolution and consistent service delivery remain essential to building customer trust.

Ultimately, the value of “The Extra Mile” will depend not only on what brands publish during the celebration but also on how they respond when customers need help long after the themed outfits, games and appreciation messages have disappeared from social media.
