Sustained Operation Hadin Kai pressure drives more fighters to abandon terrorist groups in the North-East

The Nigerian military has recorded a 213 per cent increase in terrorist surrenders in the North-East within one week, with troops of Operation HADIN KAI stepping up ground operations and efforts to disrupt terrorist logistics and supply networks across the region.

Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Military Information Officer of the Headquarters Joint Task Force, North East, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, saying the latest figures reflected growing pressure on terrorist groups operating in the theatre.

“During the period under review, the Theatre recorded a 213 per cent increase in terrorist surrenders compared with the preceding week,” Goni said.

The military attributed the increase to coordinated ground operations, engagements against identified terrorist positions and sustained efforts to restrict the movement of fighters and supplies.

The latest development adds to a pattern of high-profile defections recorded by Operation HADIN KAI in recent months.

In July, the military announced the surrender of a senior Islamic State West Africa Province finance operative in Borno State, alongside two children, while weapons and ammunition were recovered.

Earlier in July, two senior terrorist commanders also surrendered to troops in Geidam, Borno State, and were placed under military custody for profiling, debriefing and intelligence exploitation.

The military has previously linked the growing number of surrenders to sustained kinetic operations and the disruption of terrorist command, logistics and movement networks.

Goni said two high-profile terrorist members surrendered to troops on Wednesday and brought arms, ammunition and other military items with them.

He described the recovery as further evidence of the effect of sustained military pressure on the groups’ cohesion and operational capacity.

“The recovery of these weapons and ammunition further reinforces indications that sustained military pressure is having a significant effect on the cohesion, morale and operational sustainability of terrorist elements,” Goni said.

The military also recalled the surrender of other terrorist members to troops of 202 Battalion in Bama on August 7 at New Abaram.

According to Goni, those fighters surrendered after sustained military operations and internal disagreements within their enclave.

They were subsequently screened, while mobile phones and other items were recovered before they were handed over for further action.

The development comes as Nigerian forces continue to combine offensive operations with intelligence gathering and disruption of terrorist supply chains across the North-East.

The military said the approach was designed to deny terrorist groups the freedom to manoeuvre, regroup and replenish their resources.

Goni said the growing frequency of defections suggested that some fighters were increasingly unwilling or unable to sustain their involvement in terrorist activities.

The trend, however, comes against a security landscape in which terrorist groups remain capable of mounting attacks and maintaining networks across parts of the North-East.

The military’s own emphasis on continuing offensive operations reflects the fact that the surrender figures, while encouraging, do not by themselves signal the end of the insurgency.

Operation HADIN KAI has therefore maintained that pressure on remaining terrorist elements will continue alongside channels for fighters and associates willing to abandon violence.

“The objective remains clear: to further degrade terrorist capabilities, restore security and create the conditions necessary for lasting peace and stability across the North East,” Goni said.

The military has also appealed to residents to provide credible and timely information to security agencies, particularly intelligence that could help troops identify terrorist movements and logistics networks.

For the North-East, where insurgency has disrupted communities, displaced families and affected livelihoods for more than a decade, the increase in terrorist surrenders offers a potentially significant opening.

The immediate challenge for the authorities will be to translate operational gains into durable security and create conditions in which affected communities can return to normal life.
