Peter Obi urges US diplomacy over Trump’s Nigeria threat

Peter Obi urges the US to pursue diplomacy after Trump’s threat to invade Nigeria, saying insecurity must be tackled through dialogue and leadership

Peter Obi has urged the United States government to adopt a diplomatic approach following former President Donald Trump’s controversial statement suggesting possible military action in Nigeria.

In a post shared on his official X handle on Monday, the former Labour Party presidential candidate cautioned that while Nigeria is enduring one of its most violent periods in recent history, foreign military intervention is not the solution.

“There is no doubt that Nigeria is experiencing an unprecedented level of insecurity with attendant carnage and the most shocking loss of lives and property,” Obi wrote.

Citing Amnesty International, he noted that over 10,000 Nigerians have been killed since May 2023, describing the situation as “unwarranted and unprovoked” and calling for urgent action to end the bloodshed.

“It is equally important to state that the terrible situation is significantly avoidable with competent leadership and governance,” he added, stressing that effective administration remains key to resolving Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.

Obi emphasised that the crisis did not begin under the current administration but accused the APC-led government of lacking the competence, commitment, and patriotic drive needed to protect Nigerians.

“While the insecurity did not start with the present government, what is most unfortunate is the absence of competence, prudent use of resources, patriotism and passion on the part of APC-led leaders to effectively govern and lead Nigeria, where no one is unwarrantedly oppressed and killed,” he said.

The Labour Party flag bearer underscored Nigeria’s longstanding partnership with the United States, urging both democracies to rely on constructive engagement rather than threats of force.

“As democracies, Nigeria and the US have long been strategic partners committed to regional peace and security. That relationship should not falter,” Obi wrote.

“The present situation calls for constructive diplomatic and plausible engagement by both nations to address the prevailing and disturbing security concerns.”

He concluded that both countries must work “in concert and expeditiously” to restore peace and stability, warning that Nigeria’s sovereignty and human lives must not become bargaining chips in global politics.
