Nkem Owoh says social media fame cannot replace acting talent

Nkem Owoh has dismissed claims that social media fame replaces talent in Nollywood casting, insisting skill remains the key factor

Veteran Nollywood actor Nkem Owoh has dismissed growing claims that social media popularity now outweighs acting talent in Nollywood casting decisions.

The 71-year-old, popularly known as Osuofia, made the remarks during an appearance on the Selah Meditate podcast, where he addressed concerns about the evolving dynamics of the Nigerian film industry.

Nkem Owoh stated that talented actors should not feel threatened by suggestions that producers prioritise online influence over skill, insisting that such practices remain rare in the industry.

He argued that true acting ability continues to be the foundation of successful filmmaking, stressing that no level of social media fame can replace genuine talent.

“I don’t think social media fame is replacing real talent. It can’t. There is no way social media fame can replace real talent,” he said.

The veteran actor maintained that while social media has become a powerful promotional tool, it does not determine an actor’s long-term value or credibility on screen.

His comments come amid ongoing debates within Nollywood about the increasing visibility of influencers in film casting and production decisions.

Owoh, who has remained one of Nollywood’s most recognisable figures for decades, urged young actors to focus on developing their craft rather than relying solely on online presence.

He emphasised that consistency, discipline and performance remain the true benchmarks of success in the entertainment industry.

The actor’s remarks have continued to generate reactions across the industry, with many aligning with his stance on the importance of professional skill over digital popularity.
