Court orders arrest of Kwara NSCDC commandant over assault case

A Kwara Magistrate Court has ordered the arrest of the NSCDC Commandant over alleged failure to appear in an ongoing assault case in Ilorin

A Magistrate Court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara State, has ordered the arrest of the State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Abbas Mohammed, over his failure to appear before the court in an ongoing assault case involving two officers of the corps.

Chief Magistrate Adebayo Dupe issued the order on Wednesday, directing the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, to arrest the NSCDC Commandant and produce him before the court on the next adjourned date.

The directive followed an application filed by counsel to Barrister Aladodo Abdullateef Nurudeen, who allegedly suffered assault involving two NSCDC officers, Ajayi Williams Gbolahan and Busari Babatunde.

Counsel for the complainant, Prof. D.A. Ariyo-Osu, told the court that the Commandant had failed to comply with earlier court orders requiring him to produce the defendants and appear personally before the court.

He argued that the Commandant’s absence amounted to disregard for judicial authority, describing the conduct as contemptuous and urging the court to issue a warrant of arrest.

Responding, counsel for the NSCDC officers, A. Imam, informed the court that the command had written to the office of the Kwara State Chief Judge seeking reassignment of the matter, citing loss of confidence in the current court handling the case.

In his ruling, Chief Magistrate Dupe ordered that the NSCDC Commandant be arrested and produced in court on June 10, 2026, by the police authority in the state.

The case stems from a direct criminal complaint filed by the Nigerian Bar Association, Ilorin Branch, over the alleged assault of Barrister Aladodo Nurudeen at the NSCDC office in Ilorin.

According to the complaint, the lawyer was allegedly assaulted by NSCDC officers while attending to a client, an incident the association described as an unprovoked attack and abuse of authority.

The court has adjourned the matter for further hearing as proceedings continue.
