New state creation from Ogun State

Ode Ulé Kingdom supports the creation of a new state from Ogun State, proposing inclusive governance, equal representation, and a unified identity

[dropcap]H[/dropcap]is Royal Majesty and Eminence, Ọba Professor (Voc) Dr (Med) Adédayọ̀ Olúṣínọ̀ Adékọ̀yà, the Légùşęn of Ode Ulé Kingdom, delivered a compelling address at the Joint Meeting of Ọbas of Rẹ́mọ and Ìjẹ̀bú held at Ààfin Àkárìgbò on 17 January 2025.

He highlighted the importance of equitable governance and representation in advocating for a new state creation from present-day Ogun State, Nigeria.

Drawing on historical contexts, the monarch emphasised that past oversights, such as the divisions created during colonial rule in the 1930s, marginalised the people of Ode Ulé.

The creation of a new state presents an opportunity to redress these injustices and promote fair representation.

**Key Proposals for the New State**

1. **Support for Four New States**

Ode Ulé Kingdom fully supports creating four new states: Yewa State, New Ogun State, Remo State, and Ijebu State.

However, if this plan proves unfeasible, the monarch advocates for merging the Rẹ́mọ and Ìjẹ̀bú divisions into a single state with well-defined roles for minority groups, such as the Àwórì, Ìkálẹ̀, and Ègùn communities.

2. **Proposed Names for the New State**

To foster unity, suggested names include:

  • Rẹ̀mjẹ̀b State
  • Rẹ́mọ Ìjẹ̀bú State
  • Ọnà State (After River Ọnà)
  • Ọmẹ̀ State (After River Ọmẹ̀)
  • Ọkọmàyàn State (After Ọkọmàyàn River)

3. **Sharing Formula and Representation**

A 49:49:2 ratio is proposed for equitable distribution among Rẹ́mọ, Ìjẹ̀bú, and minority groups, covering political positions, local government areas, and wards.

This ratio reflects Rẹ́mọ’s higher population density and Ìjẹ̀bú’s larger land mass.

4. **State Capital**

While Ode Ulé City holds historical significance, the monarch recommended Ìkẹ́nnẹ́, the hometown of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, as the state capital, honouring his legacy.

5. **Integration of Technology in Governance**

The monarch urged the adoption of digital governance to enhance transparency and accessibility, making government services available online with a centralised control system at the capital.

**Historical and Cultural Considerations**

Highlighting Ode Ulé’s ancient origins and pivotal role in the region’s history, Ọba Adékọ̀yà called for respect and inclusion for all groups, irrespective of size or influence.

He underscored the need to abandon expansionist attitudes and foster cooperation among leadership groups.

**Conclusion**

The address concluded with a plea for at least one new state to emerge from Ogun State, encompassing the Ogun East Senatorial District.

The proposed governance framework ensures inclusivity, fairness, and unity among Rẹ́mọ, Ìjẹ̀bú, and minority communities.
