Ogun: NAFDAC, police intensify crackdown on sachet alcohol

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Ogun State Police Command have intensified enforcement against sachet and small-bottle alcoholic beverages across Ogun State, with officials warning producers and sellers to comply with regulations.

The latest move followed a meeting between Akinwale Fagoroye, NAFDAC State Coordinator for Ogun Office 1, and Bode Ojajuni, Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, at the command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Oluseyi Babaseyi, the command’s Police Relations Officer, the two agencies are working together to strengthen enforcement and protect residents from products considered potentially harmful to public health.

Fagoroye said NAFDAC had already begun enforcement in Abeokuta, with the operation expected to spread to other parts of the state.

“The enforcement exercise, which commenced in Abeokuta, is being extended to other parts of Ogun State and will continue until full compliance is achieved,” he said.

A central focus of the operation is the withdrawal of alcoholic beverages sold in sachets and PET bottles containing less than 200ml, or 20cl.

The restriction is aimed at limiting access to cheap and easily portable alcoholic drinks, particularly among children and young people.

NAFDAC officials are visiting markets, motor parks, bars, retail outlets, warehouses and manufacturing facilities as part of the exercise.

The agency is also targeting counterfeit, unregistered, adulterated, substandard, expired and improperly labelled products, as well as facilities operating without the required approvals.

Fagoroye urged manufacturers, importers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers and consumers to respect the regulations and allow authorised officials to carry out their duties.

The Ogun alcohol enforcement effort also has strong police backing, with Ojajuni pledging security support for NAFDAC during lawful regulatory operations.

“The Police and NAFDAC will continue to work together, within their respective mandates, to ensure compliance with the law and protect residents from activities and products that may pose risks to their health and safety,” Ojajuni said.

The police commissioner said the command was also enforcing the Liquor Act and other laws governing the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages in the state.

He said the measures were intended to curb illegal alcohol trade and reduce practices that could threaten public safety, particularly those capable of exposing young people to harmful behaviour.

Residents have also been encouraged to provide information about suspected counterfeit or unsafe alcoholic products and other illegal activities linked to their sale.

The intensified operation reflects a broader effort by regulatory and security authorities to ensure that alcoholic beverages sold in Ogun meet established safety and distribution requirements.

NAFDAC and the police said they would continue working together on legitimate enforcement operations designed to protect lives and promote public safety across the state.
