Ogun Daytime Curfew Controversy: Muslim leaders urge Gov. Abiodun to stop unlawful Oro-related restrictions violating citizens’ rights in Ipokia communities

Ogun Daytime Curfew Controversy has ignited fresh tension as the League of Imams and Alfas in Ogun State has petitioned Governor Dapo Abiodun over alleged unconstitutional movement restrictions in the Ipokia Local Government Area.

According to the Muslim leaders, residents of Ikolaje and Idiroko are being unlawfully forced to observe a daytime curfew under the guise of traditional rites following the death of the Oniko of Ikoland, Oba John Olakunle. The rites reportedly began on July 21 and will continue until August 19, 2025.

The Ogun Daytime Curfew Controversy has drawn sharp condemnation from the religious group, who labeled the action as “unlawful and an outright violation of fundamental human rights.”

In their petition, signed by Secretary-General Imam Tajudeen Mustapha Adewunmi, the League cited a 2017 High Court judgment that banned such restrictions and limited Oro rites to the hours of 12:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m.

They also referenced previous multi-faith peace accords—reached in 2019 and 2020—which collectively agreed to outlaw daytime Oro activities and prohibit any interference with schools, businesses, or religious centers.

The petition, forwarded to key security agencies and government officials, urged immediate intervention to halt what it described as harassment and intimidation of residents.

“We fully recognise the rights of traditionalists,” the statement read, “but no group can infringe on the daily, lawful activities of citizens. This is unconstitutional and a breach of peace.”

The Muslim leaders called for strict enforcement of standing court orders and warned that any individual or group violating those rulings must be held fully accountable.

This powerful plea underscores growing religious tension and calls attention to the delicate balance between cultural traditions and constitutional freedoms.
