Omoyele Sowore release

Omoyele Sowore, a well-known political activist and former presidential candidate, is reportedly facing inhumane treatment while in police custody, according to his lawyer, Tope Temokun

Sowore was detained on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, after honoring a police invitation from the Inspector-General of Police Monitoring Unit. But what followed, Temokun says, was far from lawful.

In a chilling statement titled Police move against Sowore is a murder plot in disguise…, Temokun revealed that Sowore was moved to an undisclosed location early Thursday.

During the forceful transfer, he allegedly sustained a serious injury to his right arm.

Even more disturbing, noxious gas was reportedly released into his holding cell just before the move—what Temokun describes as a “calculated attack.”

He likened Sowore’s treatment to past injustices faced by late Nigerian political figures Gani Fawehinmi and Moshood Abiola, warning that the events unfolding are not coincidental, but “vivid attempts on his health, his life, and his dignity.”

Temokun insists this is a slow assassination attempt disguised as due process. He demanded the immediate, unconditional release of Omoyele Sowore, a full public apology, and accountability from the Nigeria Police Force.

As of the time of reporting, the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, had yet to respond to requests for comment.
