Ooni of Ife calls for peaceful campaigns ahead of Osun 2026 election

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has called for peace and restraint among political parties, candidates and supporters in Ile-Ife, Osun State, ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election, urging citizens to protect lives and preserve the state’s democratic process.

The monarch made the appeal on Tuesday when leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola and governorship candidate Najeem Salaam, visited the palace as part of their campaign activities.

Represented by the Lowa Adimula of Ifeland, Oba Adekola Adeyeye, the Ooni reaffirmed his commitment to peaceful coexistence regardless of political differences and described Ile-Ife as the spiritual and historical foundation of the Yoruba people.

The peace appeal came amid preparations for the governorship contest, with political activities increasing across the state.

“We appeal to all political parties, candidates and supporters to shun violence, avoid bloodshed and remain patient. Elections should not divide our people or cost anyone his or her life,” the monarch said.

He urged political actors to ensure that campaigns remain peaceful while allowing voters to freely make their choices at the polls.

The Ooni also called for greater attention to the development of Ile-Ife, describing the ancient city as a place of significant historical importance to Yoruba heritage.

“Ile-Ife remains the source and ancestral home of the Yoruba people,” he said, adding that the city deserved development that reflected its cultural significance.

He referenced the contributions of the late Ooni Adesoji Aderemi, who served as Governor of the old Western Region, noting that his influence extended beyond Ile-Ife to Yorubaland and Nigeria.

Earlier, Aregbesola explained that the ADC selected Ile-Ife as the starting point of its governorship campaign because of the city’s cultural and historical relevance.

“Our tradition has always been to begin our political campaigns in Ile-Ife because we believe this is our source,” Aregbesola said.

He added that the party had maintained a tradition of visiting the palace for royal blessings before major political activities since 2004.

The appeal from the monarch comes as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies continue preparations for the Osun governorship election, with stakeholders repeatedly urging political parties to promote issue-based campaigns.

As the election draws closer, observers say maintaining a peaceful atmosphere will be crucial in ensuring that residents can participate freely without fear or intimidation.
