PDP honours Obasanjo as a democracy champion on his birthday, recognising his role in stabilising Nigeria’s Fourth Republic and voluntary power transfer
The Kabiru Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has celebrated former President Olusegun Obasanjo as a steadfast believer in democracy on the occasion of his birthday on 5 March 2026.

In a statement released on Thursday, the party lauded Obasanjo for his historic role as the first Military Head of State to voluntarily transfer power to a democratically elected administration.
The PDP also noted his significance as the party’s inaugural presidential candidate in 1998 and his two-term presidency under its platform until 2007.
“We celebrate a great believer in democracy and a statesman of historic significance. As the pioneer presidential candidate of our party and the first President of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, you played a pivotal role in consolidating democracy and stabilising our republic at a critical moment in our national history,” the statement read.

The PDP extended warm wishes for Obasanjo’s continued good health and a joyous birthday, highlighting his enduring influence on the nation’s democratic institutions.
