Five miners were feared killed and two others injured after gunmen reportedly attacked a mining site in Marit village, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The attack occurred at about 1pm on Saturday, when the assailants allegedly stormed the mining location and opened fire on workers, triggering panic as miners fled the scene.

Residents said the gunmen attacked the miners without warning, leaving five people feared dead while two others sustained gunshot injuries.

The injured victims were reportedly rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were recovered from the mining site.

Community sources described the incident as another setback for Marit and surrounding communities, which have witnessed recurring attacks despite ongoing security operations in parts of Barkin Ladi.

Security personnel were later deployed to the area to restore calm, while local residents called for increased protection of mining communities vulnerable to armed attacks.

As of the latest report, the Plateau State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement confirming the casualty figures or identifying those responsible for the ambush.

The attack adds to growing security concerns in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, where both farming and mining communities have repeatedly come under violent attacks in recent months.
