Female students of the Federal University of Education, Pankshin, were arrested after a video allegedly showed one student being assaulted

The Plateau State Police Command has arrested some female students of the Federal University of Education, Pankshin, after a viral video allegedly showed them attacking another female student in Pankshin Local Government Area on Friday, August 28, 2026.

Police spokesman, SP Alfred Alabo, said Commissioner of Police Ayodeji Faniyan directed the Area Commander in Pankshin to immediately investigate the incident and arrest those involved after the command became aware of the footage.

“Immediately the CP got wind of it, he directed the Area Commander in Pankshin LGC to act immediately, which they have done,” Alabo said.

The Plateau students arrested in connection with the incident will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department after preliminary investigations, according to the police.

Alabo said the suspects would be charged in court after the investigation is concluded.

The police spokesman condemned the alleged assault and warned young people against resorting to violence or taking the law into their own hands.

He also cautioned that filming and sharing violent acts online could expose those involved to additional criminal liability.

“In the process of committing this crime, sometimes you will commit several other crimes,” Alabo said.

“It is not just you beating somebody or meting violence against your fellow human being; even having the mind to record it is cybercrime.”

The warning comes amid growing concern over videos of assaults and other violent confrontations being recorded and circulated on social media.

Alabo urged residents who have grievances to seek redress through lawful channels rather than attempting to administer their own form of punishment.

“Learn to report to a third party that has the authority to hear your matter and give you the justice that you deserve,” he said.

He encouraged residents to report suspected crimes and disputes to the police or other appropriate security agencies so that authorities can intervene before confrontations escalate.

The command also appealed to members of the public to provide timely and credible information that could assist security agencies in preventing violence and responding quickly to incidents.

The circumstances that led to the alleged attack, including the identities of the students involved and the motive behind the confrontation, were not disclosed by the police.

The command said the investigation would establish the facts surrounding the incident before any prosecution takes place.

The case has also drawn attention to the responsibility of students and other young people when documenting incidents on social media, particularly where recordings capture or promote acts of violence.

The police stressed that the investigation would continue at the State CID before the suspects are taken to court.

“Stay clear of jungle justice. Report cases anytime you are aggrieved to the right and appropriate authority,” Alabo said.

The incident is the latest reminder of the need for universities and other educational institutions to provide safe mechanisms for resolving disputes among students while ensuring that allegations of violence are properly investigated.

For now, the police have said the arrested students will remain subject to due process as investigators establish what happened and determine the appropriate legal action.
