In a statement signed by Police Public Relations Officer SP Alfred Alabo, the suspect, 20-year-old Jonathan Sambo Bitrus from Bauchi State, was apprehended following the incident.
The victim, Miss Josephine Morolayo, reported that Bitrus visited her shop at Terminus Market to check his account balance and later requested a withdrawal of ₦1,950,000. She handed him the PoS machine to input his PIN.
“She proceeded to give him the sum of One Million Five Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (#1,550,000) and pleaded with him to wait for her boss to return for the balance of Four Hundred Thousand Naira (#400,000),” the statement said.
Upon her boss’s return, Morolayo discovered that the receipt shown by the suspect was from a previous transaction, revealing she had been defrauded. The suspect had fled with the money.
During interrogation, Bitrus confessed to accessing the victim’s transaction history and attempting to withdraw ₦1,950,000, which he believed was in the account.
He admitted cancelling the transaction but took ₦1,550,000, which he reportedly spent on an iPhone 13 Pro and clothing.
