PMAN suspension of JFO and eight others follows disciplinary proceedings linked to a controversial WhatsApp group call

The Performing Musicians Employers’ Association of Nigeria, PMAN, has suspended its National Treasurer, Baba Ojonugwa, popularly known as JFO, alongside eight other members over issues connected to a WhatsApp group call held on December 25, 2025.

PMAN suspension of JFO was confirmed in a statement issued by the association’s Acting General Secretary, Ms Gabriel, following a National Executive Council meeting held on May 17, 2026.

Others affected by the disciplinary action include Abdulsalami “Triple A” Abdulhakeem, Olumide Aduloju, Joshua Offiong, Njiribeako Alexander, Oliver “Don Oliver” Omaniode, Williams “Ejekajo” Eje, Eric “Ricky” Kussiy and Sydney “Sydney Sparrow” Asowari.

According to the statement, the individuals were suspended for 12 months after the NEC adopted recommendations from the National Disciplinary Committee concerning alleged actions deemed inconsistent with the association’s constitutional discipline and institutional integrity.

The association did not disclose the specific details of discussions that took place during the WhatsApp call linked to the disciplinary proceedings.

Ms Gabriel explained that the affected individuals were invited by the National Disciplinary Committee to appear and defend themselves during investigative sessions conducted via Zoom on April 22 and 23, 2026.

She stated that despite receiving query letters, invitation notices and reminders, the suspended members allegedly failed to participate in the proceedings.

“To ensure stability, restore constitutional order and protect the interests of PMAN members across the country,” the statement noted, interim administrative arrangements may be introduced in affected chapters pending fresh elections where necessary.

As part of the sweeping decision, the NEC appointed Comrade Uche James as Acting National Treasurer pending the expiration or lawful review of JFO’s suspension.

The association described James as an experienced accountant and committed unionist whose appointment is expected to strengthen accountability and financial transparency within PMAN.

PMAN President Pretty Okafor also reacted to the development, stressing that while criticism and internal engagement remain welcome within the union, no member or group would be permitted to undermine the association’s lawful structures.

Okafor added that PMAN remained focused on rebuilding the union, protecting musicians and expanding opportunities for members across the Nigerian music industry.
