‘Political strive’ Gombe State Govt. Demolishes PDP Governorship Candidate’s Campaign Office

Ahead 2023 flag-off of campaigns for the 2023 General Elections, the political atmosphere is being heated up by some politicians that are taking drastic measures to prevent their opponents from having an easy and smooth electioneering.

One of such cases took place in Gombe State on Tuesday as the Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya used the state machinery to demolish the campaign office of the Governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Jibrin Barde, situated within the State capital.

The Governor Yahaya-led Gombe State government which carried out the demolition of the PDP Governorship Campaign office did not give reason for its action.

The demolition was carried out with heavily armed policemen that cordoned off the road leading to the PDP Campaign office thereby prevented people including journalists from having access to the area except the bulldozers of the Gombe State Government that were guided and guarded to carry out the demolition.

The action being described as unwarranted and uncalled for is generating uproar in the state as it is being considered by political pundits as the height of political intolerance that are totally at variance with multi-party democracy and democratic ethos.

More worrisome is the fact that such political intolerance is taking place even before the commencement of the 2023 campaigns in the state thereby sending a wrong signal of unhealthy political rivalry that may not augur well for the system and the people of the state.

This is the first time since the enthronement of democracy in 1999 that such an act is being witnessed in the State in which the State government would go out to pull down a building housing the Campaign Office of an opposition party.

As at the time of filing this story, the Gombe State Government was yet to issue a statement on its action.
