[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) is facing mounting criticism from the public following the revocation of Heritage Bank’s banking license by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on 3rd June 2024.

The NDIC, appointed as the liquidator, began the verification and payment process for insured depositors, assuring that payments would be completed promptly.

According to the NDIC, they have already paid out 82.36% of the insured deposits, utilising Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) to facilitate direct transfers to alternate accounts.

However, many Nigerians have voiced their dissatisfaction with the process, accusing the NDIC of making false claims about the speed and efficiency of the payouts.

Sunday Obia, a concerned citizen, remarked that it has been over two months since the bank’s closure, yet the promised payments have not been fulfilled as stated.

“Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation – NDIC This is two months and weeks. And you come up here and say you have made payment. Oh, what sad news. May I remind of you your statement? You promise Nigerians one week. One week turns into months. Well, what I know is if you don’t.”

Another customer, Oluwaseun Odediji, shared a screenshot showing a meagre payment of N1,088.02, despite expecting a payout of N184,630.94.

“This is what you sent to me instead of N184,630.94. Please do something to fix this.”

Public trust in the NDIC has been further eroded by similar complaints, with critics accusing the corporation of spreading misinformation.

One user, Ugo Monero, highlighted the systemic inefficiencies plaguing government agencies, while another, Wizo Ekam, described the NDIC’s statements as “the lie of the century,” expressing frustration over delayed payments despite meeting all necessary requirements.

“There is no govt MDAs in Nigeria that is reliable, efficient & effective. The problem is endemic and foundational, right from the hiring process. Nigerians no longer trust the system and that is very bad. @NDICNigeria. knows that there are elements of lie here but they don’t care,” Monero wrote.

Ekam said, “This is a fat LIE of the century. How can you come up with such deceitful press statements? I have more than 3 alternate accounts linked to my BVN with zero issue yet I’ve not been paid, I even filled your form, scanned and sent to you to avoid delays. Pls Pay Me My Money.”
