The tenant, Mr Anozie Tochukwu, reported that despite paying rent consistently since January 2024, his landlord de-roofed his apartment on February 3, 2026, after a grace period to relocate had expired.
“To my greatest surprise, my wife called to inform me that the landlord had de-roofed my apartment. Hours later, heavy rain exposed our property, documents, and certificates. My pregnant wife and two children were left vulnerable,” Tochukwu recounted.
He estimated his losses at N25 million, including a television, deep freezer, chandelier, furniture, NYSC and academic certificates, clothes, medications, and savings.
The Rivers State Police Command, through spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the arrest and said investigations are ongoing.
A legal practitioner from Lawyers Watch for Justice International Initiative, Mr Raymond Okocha, condemned the act as illegal, stating, “You cannot evict a tenant by destroying property. Due process must be followed. This is malicious damage and a violation of the family’s rights.”
