Violent protests in South Africa target foreign-owned property over Igbo king installation

South Africa protest Nigerian king turns violent in Eastern Cape as protesters burn vehicles and properties in East London

Protesters in East London, South Africa, set fire to vehicles and buildings on Monday, March 30, 2026, following unrest linked to the controversial installation of a Nigerian national as an “Igbo King” in the Eastern Cape.

The South Africa protest Nigerian king incident escalated rapidly, as demonstrators opposing the coronation marched through parts of the city before the situation turned violent.

According to reports from eNCA and SABC, clashes began earlier in the day, with protesters targeting properties and vehicles believed to belong to foreign nationals.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that tensions had been building prior to the march, with opposition centred on the recognition of a Nigerian figure as a traditional leader within the local community.

Authorities have yet to release an official casualty figure, but the destruction of property has raised fresh concerns over xenophobic violence and community tensions in the region.

Security agencies are reportedly monitoring the situation, as efforts continue to restore calm and prevent further escalation.

The incident underscores the fragile dynamics surrounding immigration, cultural identity and leadership structures in parts of South Africa, where similar protests have previously erupted into violence.
