Ronaldo accuses Jesus of breaking trust in Portugal exit

Cristiano Ronaldo apologises for leaving Portugal’s camp but says broken promises by Jorge Jesus led to his departure, while insisting he remains available for the national team.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal captain, and Jorge Jesus, Portugal head coach, have become embroiled in a public dispute after Ronaldo left the national team camp ahead of the UEFA Nations League match against Denmark, with the 41-year-old forward saying on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, that a breakdown in trust over an agreement with Jesus and the Portuguese Football Federation prompted his departure.

Ronaldo broke his silence in a lengthy statement in which he accepted responsibility for walking out of camp but argued that Jesus failed to honour commitments made during a private meeting about his involvement in Portugal’s Nations League fixtures.

The Ronaldo Portugal exit followed his unused-substitute appearance against Norway, despite the captain saying Jesus had told him he would play 30 minutes after he agreed to warm up.

Ronaldo said he subsequently met Jesus to discuss the situation and that both men agreed on how the coach would explain the circumstances publicly.

According to Ronaldo, the account given at the subsequent press conference did not reflect what had been agreed privately.

He said the episode represented a second failure to keep a promise and ultimately convinced him that remaining with the squad would be harmful to the group.

“I decided to leave the camp without waiting for any further breach of word. For me, the truth is still the most important thing in the relationship between people,” Ronaldo said.

The Portugal captain also insisted that he had never attempted to influence the technical or tactical decisions of a national team coach during his almost 25 years with Portugal.

Ronaldo said he had accepted both favourable and unfavourable decisions from coaches throughout his international career and maintained that his disagreement was about trust rather than his authority over team selection.

The dispute began after Jesus, who replaced Roberto Martínez as Portugal coach in 2026, reportedly discussed a plan with Ronaldo for managing his workload during the Nations League fixtures.

Ronaldo said Jesus initially proposed that he play one match before remaining in Portugal rather than travelling for the away fixtures, before returning for the match at Porto’s Estádio do Dragão.

Ronaldo said he rejected that arrangement because he believed remaining behind while still serving as captain would set the wrong example.

The disagreement intensified after Portugal’s match against Norway.

Ronaldo said Jesus told him he would play for 30 minutes, but the forward warmed up without being introduced.

Jesus later acknowledged that he had made a mistake by asking Ronaldo to warm up without eventually bringing him onto the pitch, according to Ronaldo’s account of their discussions.

Jesus has otherwise rejected the suggestion that there was a major rift, previously telling reporters that the situation was simply a coaching decision and that he had a plan.

Ronaldo said the disagreement was compounded by what he regarded as a failure to maintain their private understanding during the press conference.

Despite his criticism of Jesus, Ronaldo did not attempt to avoid responsibility for his own decision.

He apologised to his teammates and the Portuguese public, while acknowledging that his position as captain meant his actions should be judged more strictly.

“Despite the absolute breach of trust in the coach’s word, I should not have done it. The responsibility is exclusively mine,” Ronaldo said.

The veteran forward went further by saying the Portuguese Football Federation should discipline him and that his status should not protect him from punishment.

Ronaldo said football rules should apply equally to players regardless of reputation or position, adding that being Portugal captain should be considered an aggravating factor in assessing his decision to leave camp.

The controversy has also raised questions about whether Ronaldo’s departure represents the end of his international career.

Ronaldo rejected that suggestion.

He said he expects to have one or more farewell matches at some point, but stressed that retirement is not his immediate concern. His priority, he said, remains competing and winning for Portugal.

The forward also recalled remaining with Portugal after learning of his father’s death, saying he stayed at the national team camp until after the following match because of his commitment to the country.

Ronaldo said he would continue to make himself available for Portugal provided he remains physically fit, is playing regularly and has served any suspension imposed following the camp incident.

“If I am physically well, playing for my club, with goals I hope, after serving the suspension that may be applied to me, I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team,” he said.

The dispute comes during a significant transition for Portugal following the appointment of Jesus and the continued evolution of a side that has relied heavily on Ronaldo for much of the past two decades.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s most prominent international figure and has built an extraordinary record for the country.

His latest statement, however, makes clear that his commitment to Portugal is separate from his disagreement with the current coaching regime.

For now, the captain has left the door firmly open for a return.

The next step rests with the Portuguese Football Federation, which must determine whether Ronaldo will face disciplinary action for leaving the camp.

The federation has not publicly contradicted Ronaldo’s account in the sources reviewed, while Jesus has maintained that his decisions were based on his plans for the team.

Rather than announcing the end of an era, Ronaldo’s statement has therefore left Portugal facing a more complicated question: how the national team manages its relationship with its most decorated player while maintaining the authority of its new coach.
