Ruger speaks out after tiktoker’s viral death remark

Nigerian Afrobeats singer Michael Adebayo Olayinka, popularly known as Ruger, on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, responded from Nigeria to a viral TikTok video in which an unidentified female TikTok user criticised his music and said his death would improve her mental health.

The confrontation began after the TikTok user described one of Ruger’s songs as “misogynistic and homophobic”, objecting to what she considered offensive themes in his music and online activity.

In the video, the woman said in Nigerian Pidgin, “Ruger gats die na the only thing wey fit help my mental health.”.

The statement quickly drew attention after the singer shared the video on his X account.

Ruger rejected the remark and questioned why he should be expected to accept a public wish for his death.

“I think I get a pass for her wishing me dead,” Ruger wrote in his response.

The singer, however, did not stop at addressing the death wish.

He launched a personal attack on the TikTok user’s appearance and eating habits, saying she should be concerned about her own health rather than his music.

“So apologies to the feminists and body positivity activists, but this girl is worried about the wrong thing,” Ruger wrote, before making a derogatory reference to her weight.

The exchange has consequently shifted the conversation from criticism of Ruger’s music to the boundaries of online commentary, personal attacks and how public figures respond to hostile remarks.

The TikTok user’s identity has not been disclosed in reports on the incident, and there is no indication that Ruger has taken any legal action over the statement.

The controversy also comes at an important point in Ruger’s career. The singer has been returning to the spotlight after a period away from releasing new music.

In June, Ruger’s label, Blown Boy Entertainment, said the singer had faced personal and legal challenges involving a former partner, which had contributed to his absence from the music scene.

The label said the matter had been resolved and that Ruger was preparing new projects.

Ruger’s return has included fresh music. Apple Music lists releases including “Solar”, “Mean 2 Me” and “Bend Am” among his 2026 material, while his collaboration with Darkoo on “Solar” was released earlier this year.

The latest dispute therefore arrives as the singer seeks to maintain momentum around his music following months of reduced activity.

Ruger rose to prominence after joining Jonzing World in 2021 and has since established himself as one of Nigeria’s prominent Afrobeats and Afro-dancehall performers.

His catalogue includes popular songs such as “Asiwaju” and “Bounce”, while his 2023 album Ru To the World further expanded his profile.

The incident also illustrates the increasingly direct relationship between musicians and their audiences on social media.

Platforms such as TikTok and X allow criticism of music to reach artists almost instantly, while artists can respond publicly rather than through traditional media channels.

That immediacy can create a volatile cycle in which criticism quickly becomes personal, particularly when controversial statements are amplified by viral sharing.

In this case, the original criticism centred on the TikTok user’s description of Ruger’s music and online comments.

Ruger’s response subsequently introduced a separate layer of personal remarks, ensuring that the exchange became about more than the song itself.

Neither side has indicated that the dispute has moved beyond the social media exchange.

For now, the Ruger death wish controversy remains an online clash, but it has sparked a wider conversation about criticism, offensive language and the responsibilities of both public figures and social media users when disagreements become intensely personal.
