The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has approved President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s request to deploy Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin for a peace mission in accordance with Section 5, Part 2 of the Nigerian Constitution.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio said the expeditious approval was necessary to help maintain peace and stability in the neighbouring country. Akpabio noted that the action was intended to prevent any potential humanitarian crisis within the subregion.
The Senate described the move as a step in the right direction, stressing that Nigeria has an essential role to play in safeguarding regional security at a critical time.
