Senate confirms Nigerian ministers

The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu and six others as ministers after an extensive screening session, strengthening the nation’s leadership.

 

 

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Nigerian Senate has formally confirmed Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, along with six other ministers, following an intense screening process that extended over five hours.

These confirmations mark an important step in strengthening the current government under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, a former ambassador and seasoned diplomat, will oversee matters as the new Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, bringing her expertise in international relations and policy.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu’s appointment is noteworthy as she returns to the public eye after previously disclosing details of her tenure as an ambassador in Spain, where she faced housing difficulties for an extended period.

Joining her in this cohort of confirmed ministers is Dr Jumoke Oduwole, now confirmed as Minister of Industry, Trade and Development.

Oduwole is expected to leverage her academic and policy background to boost Nigeria’s trade and economic sectors, focusing on both domestic and international growth.

Dr Nentawe Yilwatda has also been appointed as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, where he will tackle pressing issues related to poverty alleviation and disaster management.

The Humanitarian Affairs ministry remains critical given Nigeria’s ongoing challenges with displacement, poverty, and emergency response.

Muhammadu Dingyadi, confirmed as Minister of Labour and Employment, will face the task of addressing labour issues in the country. His role is especially pertinent given Nigeria’s youth unemployment rate and workforce challenges.

Other significant appointments include Idi Muktar Maiha as Minister of Livestock Development, a new ministry aimed at supporting livestock health and industry growth.

Yusuf Ata has taken on the role of Minister of State, Housing, where he is expected to bring focus to the development of affordable housing.

Finally, Dr Suwaiba Said Ahmad has been confirmed as Minister of State, Education, to support education initiatives and reforms under the main Ministry of Education.

The confirmation of these ministers followed Senate leader Opeyemi Bamidele’s motion to temporarily suspend the Senate’s rules, allowing Special Adviser to the President on Senate matters, Basheer Lado, to bring the nominees before the plenary.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio had read President Bola Tinubu’s letter nominating the candidates last Thursday, setting the stage for their final review.

With their confirmation, each of these ministers is poised to contribute to Nigeria’s governance across various critical sectors, reinforcing the administration’s goals for national growth and reform.
