Sokoto attack kills four, abducts four in Gorau

The latest violence struck Gorau just six days after a boat tragedy killed 65 people, deepening fears in the grieving community.

Suspected terrorists attacked Gorau community in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State at about 9pm on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, killing four residents, abducting four others and injuring seven people, according to Sokoto State Police Command spokesman DSP Ahmad Rufai and Gorau village head Alhaji Aliyu Magaji Na-Batsami.

The attack came only six days after a devastating boat accident in the same community claimed 65 lives, leaving families and residents already struggling with profound grief.

Na-Batsami said the attackers opened fire during the night raid, shooting 11 residents. Seven survived their injuries and were taken to hospital, while four died at the scene.

“They went from house to house searching for the money. Their main target appeared to be families of those who died in the boat accident,” the village head said.

The allegation points to a particularly disturbing motive.

The Sokoto State Government had, two days before the attack, distributed financial assistance to bereaved families in Gorau following the boat tragedy.

Each family that lost a relative in the disaster received ₦1 million, alongside two bags each of maize and millet and one bag of rice.

The intervention formed part of a wider package worth more than ₦100 million, with 408 bags of assorted food items distributed to victims of bandit attacks and the boat accident across affected communities.

The reported timing has raised fears that the relief payments may have made bereaved households vulnerable to criminals seeking to seize the money.

However, the claim that the attackers specifically targeted the beneficiaries remains an allegation from the village leadership and has not been independently established by security authorities.

DSP Rufai confirmed that the police were aware of the attack and that armed assailants invaded the community and fired at residents.

The fresh violence has added another painful chapter to a community still mourning one of Sokoto’s worst recent waterway disasters.

The Gorau boat accident occurred on August 20, when a heavily loaded vessel carrying residents across the waterway capsized.

Initial reports put the death toll at 46, but subsequent rescue operations recovered more bodies, taking the reported toll to 65, with 11 survivors accounted for.

The victims included farmers, women and children who were travelling to their farms.

The scale of the tragedy prompted renewed concerns about the safety of Nigeria’s inland waterways and the enforcement of regulations governing boat operations.

The Sokoto State Government subsequently directed local authorities and the district head at Gorau to enforce a ban on overloading boats, following concerns that overcrowding contributed to the disaster.

The community’s security concerns also come amid wider warnings about deteriorating insecurity in Sokoto.

On August 18, the Department of State Services issued an alert warning of planned attacks by terrorists and bandit groups on tertiary institutions across the state, including possible abductions of students, lecturers, staff and their relatives.

The Gorau attack therefore highlights the vulnerability of rural communities confronting both insecurity and the aftermath of disasters.

For residents, the latest violence has transformed a period intended for mourning and recovery into another episode of fear.

Four people are now dead, four others are being held by their abductors, and seven injured residents are receiving medical treatment.

For families who had barely begun to bury their loved ones from the boat disaster, the attack represents a fresh and deeply unsettling blow.

Security authorities will now face pressure to establish who carried out the assault, determine whether the relief payments were indeed the motive, rescue the abducted residents and prevent further attacks on a community already carrying the weight of a devastating loss.
