Sokoto Police Security Breakthrough as command arrests drug suspect, foils bandit attack and recovers rustled livestock in separate operations

The Sokoto State Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police and spokesperson DSP Ahmad Rufai, has recorded a significant security breakthrough following the arrest of a suspected drug dealer, the foiling of a bandit attack and the recovery of rustled livestock in separate coordinated operations across the state.

The Command confirmed that the operations were carried out between May 27 and May 30, 2026, targeting criminal activities along major routes and rural communities affected by insecurity.

Security breakthrough achieved in Sokoto police operations began with the arrest of a suspect identified as Ummaru Abubakar Gugare during a stop and search operation along the Kebbi-Sokoto Road.

Police operatives attached to the Bado Division intercepted the suspect while he was riding an unregistered motorcycle alongside another individual who managed to escape.

A search of the suspects reportedly led to the recovery of a sack containing substances suspected to be Indian hemp, alongside quantities of controlled drugs including Axzol, Benthexol and D5 tablets.

The recovered items were taken into police custody while efforts continue to apprehend the fleeing suspect.

In a separate operation, the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit successfully foiled an attempted bandit attack on Zabori, Tambaranga and Gidan Yero communities in Wamakko Local Government Area.

The operation followed a distress call alerting security operatives to an invasion by armed bandits.

Officers reportedly engaged the suspects near Abdalo Forest in Gwadabawa Local Government Area, blocking their escape route and exchanging gunfire with the attackers.

Police authorities stated that the suspected bandits were forced to retreat into the forest, with some believed to have sustained gunshot injuries during the confrontation.

Significant security gains reported in Sokoto police operations further saw the arrest of another suspect, identified as Musa Usman of Damba Village in Illela Local Government Area, during the same operation.

Security operatives also recovered 11 cows and five sheep believed to have been stolen during the raid.

The animals have been placed in police custody pending identification and return to their rightful owners.

The police command described the coordinated operations as part of ongoing efforts to intensify the fight against drug trafficking, kidnapping and rural banditry across Sokoto State.

Investigations are ongoing, while the command confirmed that efforts have been stepped up to track down other suspects linked to the incidents.

The developments have been described by residents as a reassuring sign of improved security presence in vulnerable communities, particularly those frequently targeted by criminal gangs.
