Spelling Bee Nigeria organisers have opened registration for Season 3, inviting students aged 8 to 13 across the country to compete for national recognition and an opportunity to represent Nigeria at an international spelling competition in the United States.

The new season, announced by Young Educators Africa, is being supported by the U.S. Mission Nigeria, Rotary Club of Victoria Island East and other educational and corporate partners as the programme seeks to combine literacy development with confidence-building and academic excellence.

Registration is priced at ₦10,000, according to details released by the organisers. The competition is open to pupils within the specified age bracket, covering learners in primary and early secondary education.

The launch comes months after Nigeria recorded its strongest performance yet at the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC.

Eleven-year-old Newton Temojo, who emerged as Nigeria’s 2026 national spelling champion, advanced to the quarterfinals of the international contest before his run ended on the vocabulary word “dissuade”. Official Scripps records list Temojo among the 2026 competitors under Spellingbee in Nigeria.

Temojo’s performance represented an improvement on Nigeria’s preliminary-round exit at the 2025 edition. Nigeria was also represented at the 2026 contest by Amazing-Grace Salami, who had previously become the country’s first Scripps Spelling Bee Nigeria champion.

The international experience provides a significant backdrop to Season 3, particularly as organisers seek to give another generation of young Nigerians a route from local competition to global academic exposure.

The 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee featured 247 national competitors from the United States and five countries outside the country, including Nigeria and Ghana.

For the Nigerian programme, the connection with the US competition has therefore become more than a promotional feature.

It represents a pathway through which strong performances in a national contest can lead to participation on an international stage.

The Nigerian competition is organised by Young Educators Africa, with the Rotary Club of Victoria Island East among its partners.

Reporting on the 2026 national finals said the contest attracted participants from states including Abuja, Taraba, Ondo and Lagos, while the final was held at Greensprings School.

The programme has also attracted support from organisations including Checkers Custard, Maltina, Lucid Education Initiative and Kids FM 101.7 Lagos, reflecting the involvement of educational, private-sector and civic partners in expanding literacy opportunities for children.

Beyond correctly spelling difficult words, the organisers present the competition as a platform for developing vocabulary, communication, confidence and the discipline required to perform under pressure.

That broader objective is consistent with the structure of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which now includes vocabulary questions alongside traditional spelling rounds as part of its emphasis on word knowledge and literacy.

The new season also carries a human-interest dimension for families and schools.

For participating children, the contest offers an opportunity to test their preparation against peers from different parts of Nigeria while gaining experience that can extend beyond the classroom.

Organisers are now encouraging eligible students and schools to register as Season 3 gathers momentum.

With the recent international performance of Nigerian spellers still fresh, the new edition presents another opportunity to discover and nurture young talent while strengthening the country’s growing presence in global academic competitions.
