STN secures licence for nationwide telecom entry

Swift Telephone Network Limited has secured a Unified Access Service Licence from the Nigerian Communications Commission, giving the Nigerian-owned telecommunications company regulatory approval to provide mobile, voice, data and fixed telecommunications services across Nigeria from October 1, 2026.

The 10-year licence, renewable after its initial term, marks a significant new phase for STN as it moves from its earlier telephone service operations towards becoming a broader telecommunications operator.

The NCC’s database lists Swift Telephone Network Limited among holders of Unified Access Services licences, with the current licence running from October 1, 2026, to September 30, 2036.

The approval places STN in a market dominated by established operators, particularly MTN Nigeria and Airtel Nigeria, but the licence itself does not mean the company has already launched a nationwide mobile network.

STN has yet to announce a commercial launch date. Its Director of Legal and Regulatory Services, Yetunde Okafor, said the company would unveil strategic partnerships, infrastructure rollout plans and stakeholder programmes in the coming weeks as preparations for commercial operations continue.

For Chief Executive Officer Oluwole Adetuyi, the approval represents more than a regulatory milestone.

“This UASL is not just a licence. It is a new chapter. It represents where we started, what we have endured, how we have evolved, and where we are going. We are building in Nigeria, for Nigeria,” Adetuyi said.

STN said its next phase will focus on telecommunications infrastructure, wider connectivity and efforts to help close Nigeria’s digital divide.

The company also plans to invest in training Nigerian engineers, technicians and digital professionals while giving greater attention to local contractors, vendors and service providers.

The company said it would also work with international technology partners, creating opportunities across areas including distribution, retail and technical support.

Adetuyi described the broader ambition as helping to build Nigeria’s digital economy “from the ground up”.

STN’s history gives the latest development some context. According to the company’s account of its evolution, its telecommunications journey dates back to the late 1990s, when it began as a calling operation supporting the NUGA Games.

It later expanded into digital telephony and enterprise communication services before rebuilding its operations from 2017 and resuming operations in 2019.

The new licence therefore represents a move beyond its earlier business model rather than the creation of an entirely new company.

STN is entering the sector at a particularly important point for Nigeria’s telecommunications industry.

NCC figures for July 2026 put the country’s active mobile subscription base at 195.11 million, up from 192.23 million in June.

Teledensity also increased from 88.67 per cent to 90 per cent during the month.

MTN Nigeria remained the largest operator, recording 100.86 million active subscriptions, equivalent to 51.76 per cent of the market.

Airtel Nigeria followed with 66.76 million subscriptions and a 34.26 per cent share.

Globacom recorded 23.63 million subscriptions, while T2, formerly known as 9mobile, had 3.61 million.

Together, MTN and Airtel accounted for 167.62 million active subscriptions, or about 86 per cent of the market.

Those figures underline the scale of the challenge facing STN.

Securing the regulatory approval is one milestone, but building a commercially viable mobile network requires substantial investment in infrastructure, spectrum, transmission, distribution, customer acquisition and service quality.

The experience of other operators also shows that obtaining authorisation is only the beginning.

Nigeria’s market has attracted additional licensed operators and newer entrants, but subscriber scale remains concentrated among the established networks.

BusinessDay noted that STN’s eventual position will depend on how quickly it can build network capacity, secure the necessary spectrum arrangements and develop an attractive value proposition for customers.

For consumers, however, the arrival of another fully licensed operator could potentially widen the range of choices available in a market where mobile connectivity has become central to banking, commerce, education, entertainment and everyday communication.

STN has positioned its expansion around that wider digital need.

The company says its objective is not simply to sell voice and data services but to contribute to a more locally driven telecommunications ecosystem through infrastructure investment, skills development and partnerships with Nigerian businesses.

Whether that ambition translates into significant market share will depend on what follows the licence.

STN now has the regulatory foundation to operate across the telecommunications segments covered by its UASL, but its commercial impact will only become clearer when it reveals its network rollout, technology partners, spectrum arrangements, pricing and launch timetable.

For now, the NCC’s approval gives STN something it has not previously had at this scale: a licence to pursue a full-service telecommunications future in a Nigerian market approaching 200 million active mobile subscriptions.
