As the crucial National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) looms closer, reports suggest growing tensions within the party, particularly within the camp led by FCT minister Nyesom Wike.
Sources reveal that Engr. Seyi Makinde, a prominent member of the G-5 faction and serving governor of Oyo state, has opted to distance himself from the group amidst strained relations. Makinde is reportedly aligning with voices advocating for a change in the party’s leadership.
While the Wike-led camp backs Ambassador Illiya Damagum for the position of PDP national chairman, the faction led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is supporting Senator Gabriel Suswam for the role.
The NEC meeting, scheduled for this Thursday, will be preceded by several strategic gatherings, including meetings of the PDP governors’ forum, the PDP Caucus, and the Board of Trustees (BoT).
In addition to Suswam, former minister Humphrey Abba (from Kogi State) and Dr. Emmanuel Agbo (from Benue State) have expressed interest in becoming the party chairman. Notably, all three hail from the North Central region.
