NLC and TUC urged to reschedule Abuja protest as police warn of security risks and potential infiltration by non-state actors
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has advised the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to postpone their planned protest in Abuja, citing intelligence reports of potential security threats.

The rally, scheduled for Tuesday, 3 February 2026, was intended to demonstrate solidarity with affected workers.
In a statement on Monday, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, acknowledged the constitutional right to peaceful assembly but warned that proscribed groups, including the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, could infiltrate the protest to disrupt public order.
Adeh emphasised that the appeal to reschedule was made to safeguard residents, protect freedom of movement, and ensure the uninterrupted conduct of lawful activities.
The unions had announced on Sunday that the peaceful demonstration would take place at the Federal Capital Development Authority, directing all affiliates to mobilise members and ensure maximum participation.
The protest follows an indefinite strike by FCT administration workers, which began on 19 January over unpaid salaries, promotion arrears, and poor working conditions.
The FCT authorities had previously approached the National Industrial Court to declare the strike illegal, but the court ordered the workers to resume duty.
The NLC and TUC have accused the authorities of intimidation and vowed to resist measures aimed at suppressing the industrial action.
The police appeal comes as part of ongoing efforts to prevent disruptions in the city while balancing citizens’ right to protest.
