A 25-year-old Ugandan pastor, Bernard Mulongo, has reportedly been killed hours after taking part in a public Christian-Muslim debate, with authorities investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

According to witnesses, Mulongo received threats after the debate, where two Muslim women were reportedly said to have converted to Christianity.

The witnesses alleged that Imam Hassan Musa made threatening remarks against the pastor, including a statement that he “deserve[d] death” over his involvement in the conversions.

Later that day, after participating in a radio interview, Mulongo was reportedly travelling with a friend when armed men on motorcycles intercepted them.

The friend escaped, while Mulongo was allegedly taken away before his body was later discovered with multiple injuries.

Police have launched an investigation into the killing. Musa has reportedly been identified as a suspect, although authorities have not confirmed his involvement and he remains at large.

Mulongo, who was married and had two children, is being mourned by relatives, members of his congregation and supporters who have called for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
