Cape Town Police under scrutiny after Nigerian man dies during operation

Nigerian national Chika Ibe died during a South African Police Service (SAPS) operation at Parksig Villas Complex, Bellville, Cape Town, on Thursday, 23 July 2026, after officers reportedly restrained him during an incident that has prompted competing accounts and demands for an independent investigation.

The case has drawn attention after a video from the scene appeared to show police officers restraining Ibe, while some witnesses alleged that the restraint involved choking and suffocation.

Authorities and community representatives have presented different accounts of what happened during the operation.

Ibe, who was from Lokpaukwu in Abia State, Nigeria, reportedly died during a police operation in Bellville.

The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) said the circumstances surrounding his death were deeply concerning and called for a transparent investigation by relevant authorities.

Rev. Frank Onyekwelu, President of NICASA, said the allegations surrounding Ibe’s death required urgent attention.

“These allegations are deeply disturbing and, if confirmed, constitute a gross violation of human rights and the rule of law,” Onyekwelu said.

NICASA called on the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and SAPS leadership to conduct a comprehensive investigation, urging that anyone found responsible should face legal consequences.

The organisation also appealed for calm among Nigerians living in South Africa while the investigation continues.

The South African authorities have disputed allegations of wrongdoing. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate confirmed that it had opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death after the matter was referred by Western Cape police.

According to IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping, police had reportedly conducted an operation following information about suspected drug activity.

Authorities said the deceased collapsed during the operation and that a post-mortem examination would help determine the cause of death.

The incident has intensified concerns among members of the Nigerian community in South Africa, particularly over allegations of excessive force and the treatment of foreign nationals during police operations.

Community groups have urged authorities to ensure accountability while avoiding conclusions before investigations are completed.

Nigeria’s diplomatic authorities have also expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding Ibe’s death.

The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg described the incident as questionable and called for further investigation into the matter.

The case comes amid previous tensions involving Nigerian nationals and law enforcement operations in South Africa.

Another Nigerian man, Emeka Charles Iroegbu, reportedly died during a separate police operation weeks earlier, with that matter also referred for investigation.

As investigations continue, attention remains focused on the findings of IPID and any available forensic evidence that could clarify the events leading to Ibe’s death.

For his family and community members seeking answers, the outcome of the probe is expected to play a crucial role in determining accountability and restoring confidence in the process.
