Speaking at a reception for his predecessor, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Piwuna reaffirmed the union’s commitment to academic freedom and better working conditions for Nigerian lecturers.
“I will sustain the demand for university autonomy, academic freedom, and a conducive environment for our members,” Piwuna said.
He also stressed that while strike action is not desired, it remains a necessary universal tool if agreements are ignored.
Prof. Osodeke, reflecting on his tenure, attributed the mass migration of Nigerian academics to poor treatment under the past administration.
He said ASUU’s firm stance saved public universities from collapse, despite clashes with former Labour Minister Chris Ngige during President Buhari’s era.
