Utono Terror Threat sparks panic in Kebbi State as militants demand N100 million, prompting reinforced security and alert residents

Fresh tension gripped Utono community on Thursday after a letter allegedly from suspected terrorists demanded N100 million before the group would be allowed to enter the town.

The letter, reportedly written in Hausa and dated February 17, 2026, was delivered to community leaders in the early hours of Thursday.

It warned residents not to ignore the message, stating: “This is not a joke. We are coming to preach. You must pay us N100 million. If you refuse, you will face the consequences and have no one to blame but yourselves. Even if you call soldiers, they cannot stop us.”

The alleged threat referenced a previous attack on Woru community in Kiama Local Government Area, Kwara State, where several people were killed after a similar warning was disregarded.

A community source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the letter had caused widespread fear.

“People are scared. The mention of what happened in Woru has made the threat more frightening. Many families are already discussing safety plans in case anything happens,” the source said.

Confirming the letter’s authenticity, Alhaji Ahmed Idris, Chief Press Secretary to the Kebbi State Governor, said security agencies had been deployed to Utono to prevent any attack.

He added that air surveillance and other measures had been put in place to reassure residents.

Security presence has been reinforced across Utono and neighbouring settlements, with residents remaining on high alert.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely amid mounting concerns over armed groups carrying out raids, kidnappings, and extortion in rural areas of Kebbi and neighbouring states.
