Wema Bank Plc, Nigeria’s oldest indigenous bank and the pioneer of Africa’s first fully digital bank, ALAT, has been named Nigeria’s Best Digital Bank for Consumers 2026 by global financial publication Euromoney.

The recognition highlights Wema Bank’s continued investment in digital banking, customer experience and financial inclusion, strengthening its reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading technology-driven financial institutions.

The Award was presented as part of the annual Euromoney Awards for Excellence, which recognise financial institutions delivering innovation, measurable impact and improved value for customers.

Euromoney cited Wema Bank’s digital transformation journey, particularly the growth of ALAT, as a key factor behind the award. The platform has continued to introduce new features aimed at making banking services more accessible, efficient and convenient for customers.

Speaking on the achievement, Wema Bank Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Moruf Oseni said the award reflected years of deliberate efforts to create a digital banking experience centred on customers.

“This award is a strong validation of the deliberate investments we have made over the years to build a truly digital bank that puts customers at the centre of everything we do,” Oseni said.

He added that the bank’s approach to innovation focused on solving real customer needs rather than adopting technology simply for its own sake.

“Innovation for us has never been about technology for its own sake. It has always been about creating solutions that make banking easier, faster, safer and more rewarding for every customer,” he said.

A major part of Wema Bank’s digital expansion has been the evolution of ALAT, which now includes features such as voice banking, tap-to-pay services, personalised financial solutions and investment opportunities through strategic partnerships.

The bank has also expanded the use of artificial intelligence-powered fraud monitoring, faster digital account onboarding, customer personalisation tools and agency banking services to improve access to financial services across Nigeria.

Euromoney further recognised Wema Bank’s use of data-driven solutions to provide customers with tailored recommendations across savings, investments and credit products based on individual financial needs.

With more than eight decades of operations in Nigeria’s banking sector, Wema Bank has continued to position technology as a central part of its growth strategy, combining digital innovation with traditional banking expertise.
