Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has confirmed a significant update as WhatsApp Ends Support for five older iPhone models from 30 November 2026, requiring users to upgrade their software to maintain access.

The change follows a revision of the app’s system requirements, with the minimum supported Apple operating system rising from iOS 15.1 to iOS 15.5.

Devices running versions below this threshold will no longer be able to use the service after the deadline.

The affected models include the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, first-generation iPhone SE, iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

While these devices are still capable of running up to iOS 15.8.8, users must install the update manually to remain compatible with the platform.

WhatsApp Ends Support for older systems as part of a broader strategy to maintain security, improve performance and support newer features.

Industry observers note that such periodic updates are common among major technology platforms seeking to balance innovation with user safety.

A similar policy adjustment last year raised the minimum requirement to iOS 15.1, which led to the complete loss of support for earlier devices such as the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 series.

The latest move continues that trend, though its impact is expected to be limited.

For most users, the update will pass without disruption, as the majority of active devices already operate on newer software versions.

However, those still using mid-2010s hardware may face a crucial decision between updating their system or upgrading their device.

Users can check their current software version by navigating to Settings, General, and About on their iPhone. Updates can be installed through the Software Update section within the same menu.

Beyond iPhones, older iPads running outdated software may also be affected, although WhatsApp has not released a detailed list of impacted tablet models.

The development underscores the fast pace of mobile technology evolution, where continued access to essential apps increasingly depends on keeping devices up to date.
