FG criticises Wizchino road work in Nasarawa, citing slow progress, poor quality, and non-compliance with ministry standards

The Federal Government has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the quality and pace of work by Wizchino Engineering Limited on the Keffi-Nasarawa-Toto-Abaji road in Nasarawa State.

The statement followed an inspection of ongoing federal road projects across the state on Friday, 5 March 2026.

Federal Controller of Works in Nasarawa State, Ishaku Mamri, said the contractor has failed to adhere to project specifications despite repeated directives and funds released for smooth progress.

Mamri stressed that roads constructed by the Federal Ministry of Works are intended to be durable and serve Nigerians for years.

“To be honest, this set of contractors, I’m disappointed in them. The work is not done the way it is supposed to be done,” Mamri said.

“When I give them a letter on what to do, they will not do it; they will do what they feel like doing. This is not a banana republic.”

Salihu Alkali, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Nasarawa State Council, urged the Minister of Works, David Umahi, to revoke the contract and award it to a more competent contractor.

Alkali cited substandard equipment and extremely slow progress, adding, “Can you imagine using watering cans to pour bitumen on the road? Government spending should be accounted for.”

Nasarawa State Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, Mu’azu Adamu Gosho, also expressed concern, highlighting the urgency of completing the project before the rainy season.

He noted that delays and poor execution could exacerbate road deterioration in critical sections.

Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Works praised the swift progress and quality of the 15-kilometre Lafia bypass stretching to Makurdi, a key route for easing traffic congestion through the Lafia metropolis.

Mamri confirmed the bypass project is 92.6 per cent complete and expected to be ready for commuters by the end of March 2026.

During the inspection, the team also visited Kwarra community in Keana Local Government Area, assessing a 6.4-kilometre road project awarded in 2022, noting the continued need for compliance with construction standards and timely delivery.
