Thirty-three passengers were rescued by Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja and troops of Joint Task Force North-West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, in the Magazu area of Tsafe Local Government Area, Zamfara State, on Saturday, 8 August 2026, after soldiers and police officers confronted terrorists who had abducted the commuters along the route.

The dramatic rescue followed intelligence received by Sector 2 troops and Nigeria Police Force personnel in Tsafe late on Saturday about passengers being taken away by armed terrorists.
According to Danja, the Media Information Officer of JTF North-West Operation FANSAN YAMMA, troops immediately mobilised towards the area and caught up with the abductors as they attempted to move the victims to an undisclosed location.
“Acting promptly, the troops mobilized to the location and made contact with the terrorists, who were already moving the abducted passengers to an unknown destination,” Danja said.
The troops engaged the terrorists with sustained fire, forcing the abductors to abandon the passengers and escape into adjoining bushes.
All 33 victims were subsequently secured and rescued. The military said there were no casualties among the passengers.
The troops later began searching the surrounding area in an effort to track the fleeing attackers.
The Theatre Commander of Operation FANSAN YAMMA commended the soldiers for their prompt response and professionalism, describing the operation as another demonstration of the military’s determination to protect civilians and keep major transport routes open.
The military also appealed to residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information about suspicious movements and activities to security agencies.
The rescue comes against a difficult security backdrop in Zamfara, where kidnapping and armed banditry have remained persistent threats to communities and travellers.
Operation FANSAN YAMMA has recorded several rescue operations in the state in recent months.
In May, troops rescued 31 kidnapped victims around the Bagega-Kawaye axis in Anka Local Government Area following an air operation and subsequent ground assault on terrorist positions.
In July, the operation also recorded another series of interventions across Zamfara, Katsina and Kebbi, including the rescue of civilians during a foiled abduction attempt in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara.
The repeated operations underline the scale of the challenge facing security forces in the North-West, where criminal groups continue to exploit remote roads and rural communities.
The Tsafe area itself has featured in previous kidnapping incidents.
In July, nine victims who had been abducted along the Tsafe-Kuchere Road were rescued after escaping from their captors’ hideout while the terrorists were asleep.
The latest operation, however, ended with all 33 passengers safely recovered before their abductors could take them deeper into the bush.
The Associated Press also reported the rescue, noting that troops engaged the abductors in a firefight before the attackers abandoned the hostages and fled.
The report placed the incident within the wider pattern of insecurity affecting Zamfara and other parts of Nigeria.
For the passengers and their families, the outcome represents a welcome moment of relief after what could have become a prolonged ordeal.
For the security agencies, the operation reinforces the importance of rapid intelligence sharing and swift intervention when travellers are intercepted by armed groups.
The fleeing terrorists remained at large as of the latest reports, while troops continued efforts to locate and apprehend them.
The rescue provides a positive operational development in an area where insecurity continues to place pressure on ordinary Nigerians using major roads for work, family visits and other daily journeys.
