There is no plan to merge with PDP – LP

THE Labour Party (LP) has stated that it has no plans to merge with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in order to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the general elections in 2027.

Obiora Ifoh, LP’s spokesman, stated in a statement today that his party had just ended the 2023 presidential election episode and that a post mortem was yet to be held.

Ifoh stated that the party’s future plans have not been discussed and that “when we do, Nigerians will be properly informed.”

The LP was responding to a suggestion by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential candidate in February, that opposition parties join forces to defeat the ruling APC in the next presidential election.

On Tuesday, Atiku raised concerns that Nigeria was becoming a “one-party dictatorship” and urged other opposition parties to band together to defeat the ruling APC in the next elections.

Responding in a statement issued today, the LP stated that Atiku’s request “was only a proposal, and every Nigerian should be interested in making democracy work in Nigeria, and that what we have now is an autocracy.”

“There was no where in the response that the purported merger between LP and PDP was mentioned.” Ifoh maintained.

The ruling APC also criticized Atiku over the suggestion, stating that the ex-VP and his party had failed in elections since 2015 and have failed to provide meaningful opposition to Nigerians.
