Following a terrible occurrence on Tuesday in Ibadan’s Bodija Area, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde revealed that initial security agency investigations indicate that explosive devices hidden by unauthorised miners were the source of the explosion. At least two individuals have died and 77 more have been hurt in the horrific tragedy.

The explosion, which occurred on Tuesday, affected several areas, including the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Oyo State House of Assembly, and residences in Bodija, Ologuneru, Apete, New Garage, Bashorun, Akobo, Sango, and Eleyele. The aftermath of the blast raised concerns about the safety and security of the affected communities.
Governor Makinde, who visited the scene of the explosion Tuesday night, stated that though further investigations were ongoing, the preliminary findings indicated that illegal miners had stored explosive devices in one of the houses in Bodija, leading to the tragic incident.
In a tweet on Wednesday, Governor Makinde assured the public that those found culpable would be held accountable. He said, “Preliminary investigations by the security agencies revealed that illegal miners occupying one of the houses in Bodija had stored explosive devices there which caused the blast. The investigations are ongoing. All those found culpable for this will be brought to book.”
The governor also provided an update on the casualties, stating that two people lost their lives, and 77 others were injured. He expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and pledged government support for the medical bills of the victims.
“In total, we have 77 injured victims so far, most of whom were treated and discharged, and two fatalities. May their souls rest in peace, and may God give their loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” Governor Makinde added.
Furthermore, he assured the affected residents that the government would support them in rebuilding their lives. Rescue operations and medical assistance are already underway, with emergency services deployed to the scene.
Governor Makinde urged residents to remain calm, stay away from the immediate scene of the incident, and contact emergency services at 615 for any assistance. The state government is working diligently to manage the aftermath of the tragedy and provide necessary support to those affected.
