Illegal properties on Orchid Road-Ikota drainage channel face immediate removal

In a bid to address the longstanding issue of illegal properties encroaching on System 156 (Orchid Road-Ikota) drainage channel, the commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has authorised the Enforcement Unit of the Ministry to take swift action.

After extensive engagement with stakeholders aimed at mitigating the damage caused by these unauthorized structures, the owners have failed to adhere to agreed-upon plans for finding alternative solutions.

The Orchid Road-Ikota drainage channel plays a critical role in managing water flow and preventing flooding in the area. However, the presence of illegal properties along its banks has significantly impeded its effectiveness, exacerbating the risk of flooding and environmental degradation.

Despite concerted efforts to reach a compromise with the owners of these properties, including exploring alternative arrangements, compliance has been lacking.

Consequently, the ministry has determined that immediate removal is necessary to restore the functionality of the drainage channel and mitigate the risk to surrounding communities.

The Enforcement Unit will be tasked with overseeing the removal process, ensuring that it is carried out efficiently and in accordance with established regulations.

“While the decision to remove the properties may pose challenges for the affected owners, it is imperative for safeguarding the well-being and safety of the broader community,” the commissioner emphasised.
