Popular Twitter influencer David Hundeyin has taken to social media to mock Rishi Sunak following his defeat in the recent UK election.

In a post on his X handle, Hundeyin wrote, “Orishirisi ti lule,” a phrase in Yoruba that loosely translates to “varieties have crashed.”

This post appeared to play on Sunak’s name and highlighted the irony of Sunak congratulating Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after his controversial election victory in 2023, despite Hundeyin’s own support for Peter Obi.

Rishi Sunak

Hundeyin’s jab at Sunak comes on the heels of a significant political shift in the UK.

On June 5, in a Friday morning broadcast, Rishi Sunak conceded defeat to Labour’s Keir Starmer, acknowledging a “difficult night” for his Conservative Party, which has lost power after 14 years. “The Labour Party has won this general election, and I’ve called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory,” Sunak stated.

The outgoing UK Prime Minister expressed regret for the loss and assured a peaceful transition of power.

“Today, power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner, with goodwill on all sides. That is something that should give us all confidence in our country’s stability and future. I am sorry. I take responsibility for the loss,” Sunak added.

With the Labour Party now holding over 326 seats, Keir Starmer addressed his supporters in London, promising “national renewal” after 14 years of Conservative rule.

“You campaigned for it, you fought for it, you voted for it and now it has arrived. Change begins now,” Starmer told Labour staff. “It feels good, I have to be honest. This is what it is for. A changed Labour party, ready to serve our country.”

However, Starmer also cautioned that having “a mandate like this comes with a great responsibility.”

He emphasised the need for “national renewal” and restoring faith in politics.

“If you work hard, if you play by the rules, this country should give you a fair chance to get on… We have to restore that,” he said.

“We have to return politics to public service, show that politics can be a force for good. Make no mistake, that is the great test for politics in this era. The fight for trust is the battle that defines our age.”

Rishi Sunak’s tenure as Prime Minister began in 2022 following Liz Truss’s resignation after just 45 days in office due to heavy criticism of her economic policies.

Now, as he steps down, the UK braces for a new chapter under Keir Starmer’s leadership.
