Former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has called on the Federal Government to arrest and prosecute individuals advocating for the mass relocation of Igbos from Lagos and other Southwest states. His call follows a social media post demanding such relocation from August 20 to August 30.
Atiku denounced the rhetoric as divisive and a threat to national peace and security. He expressed concern over the “troubling silence” five days after the divisive calls were made, urging that those behind the campaign be held accountable to deter future incitement.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Atiku said, “The recent call for a protest under the hashtag #IgboMustGo, demanding the forced relocation of Igbo people from Lagos and other Southwest states, is deeply troubling and fundamentally opposed to the principles of unity and coexistence that define our nation. Such rhetoric is not only divisive but also endangers our peace and security, as our Constitution guarantees every Nigerian the right to live and work freely anywhere in the country.”
He drew parallels with historical events, warning against the dangers of allowing hatred to spread. “History has shown us the consequences of allowing hatred and bigotry to fester, as seen in Rwanda. What began with inflammatory rhetoric led to devastating outcomes. We must learn from these lessons and act decisively.”
Atiku urged the Nigerian government and relevant authorities to investigate, arrest, and prosecute those inciting ethnic discrimination and violence. “The rule of law must prevail, and those found guilty of incitement should face the full extent of legal consequences,” he added.
Emphasizing Nigeria’s strength in its diversity, Atiku called for unity and understanding, highlighting that Lagos and the Southwest are culturally rich regions where various ethnic groups contribute to national development. He urged Nigerians to reject divisive rhetoric and support a harmonious coexistence.
Atiku concluded with a call for swift action from security agencies, stating, “Immediate action to arrest, investigate, and prosecute those behind this heinous agenda is crucial. This will serve as a deterrent to others who might consider pursuing similar paths that threaten our national security.”
