ACP Muyiwa Adejobi clarified that arrest by proxy is illegal, unprofessional, and unacceptable, responding to a query on X.

ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer (PPRO), recently clarified the illegality of arrest by proxy during an interaction on the social media platform X.

Responding to a user’s query, ACP Adejobi unequivocally stated that arresting one person in place of another is not only unprofessional but also illegal and unacceptable.

The query from the X user was straightforward: “Is arrest by proxy legal?”

ACP Adejobi’s response was equally direct, affirming, “Arrest by proxy is unprofessional, illegal, and unacceptable. Re-echo it. You can’t arrest the mother in place of her son for an offence she knows nothing about.”

He further explained that exceptions might only apply if there is evidence of conspiracy or if the person being arrested is an accessory to the crime.

Without such evidence, arrest by proxy is an act of “wickedness” and “illegality.”

ACP Adejobi also mentioned that the police would soon discuss these offences in more detail, reinforcing the commitment to lawful and professional conduct.
