Experts claim CNG vehicles save 70% in costs compared to petrol, offering environmental benefits but face challenges with conversion costs and station availability.

[dropcap]E[/dropcap]xperts highlight that cars using Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) can save up to 70% in maintenance and running costs compared to petrol-powered vehicles.

Automobile experts have revealed that vehicles powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) can save up to 70% in maintenance and running costs compared to those running on Premium Motor Spirit (petrol).

In interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, they emphasized the multiple advantages of converting from petrol to CNG.

Mr. Bayero Farah, Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), explained that CNG not only offers fuel efficiency but also enhances engine performance and longevity while being environmentally friendly.

He noted that CNG vehicles are expected to provide stable fuel prices, as they are less affected by exchange rates and production challenges.

Despite the benefits, Farah acknowledged that the initial cost of conversion is currently high. He mentioned that NITT is actively working to establish conversion facilities across the country through the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI), which aims to create awareness about CNG and integrate stakeholders into its value chain.

Mr. Oseni Suleiman, National President of the Amalgamated Union of Motor Mechanics and Technicians, echoed these sentiments, highlighting that CNG burns more cleanly than petrol, reducing wear and tear on engines and significantly lowering emissions.

He emphasized the need for more CNG refill stations in Nigeria, as the availability is currently limited compared to petrol and diesel stations.

Suleiman also noted that CNG is safer than other fuels in the event of a spill, as it disperses quickly, minimizing the risk of fire and explosion. He called for government support in training artisans for the conversion of petrol vehicles to CNG.

Car dealer Mr. Julius David observed a growing demand for CNG vehicles among consumers who are increasingly aware of the benefits, particularly in light of petrol market unpredictability, which often results in scarcity and higher prices.

CNG vehicle owners have reported cost-effective and easy maintenance, with one owner mentioning that a full cylinder costing N4,000 lasts over a week for his daily commute.

However, concerns about the high conversion costs—ranging from N700,000 to N1 million—persist, prompting calls for more government initiatives to open conversion centers and CNG filling stations across Nigeria.
